Team Russia won the ISU World Team Trophy in Figure Skating for the first time since the introduction of the event in 2009 as competition wrapped up in Osaka (JPN) on Saturday with the Pairs and Ladies Free Skating. Russia scored a runaway victory over defending champions Team USA by 125 to 110 points. Team Japan took bronze with 107 points.

Nils van der Poel broke a world record at sea-level on Sunday – a feat many had thought to be impossible in modern Speed Skating. The Swede won the 10,000m title in 12 minutes, 32.95 seconds. In the preceding 1500m, Thomas Krol (NED) won gold. In the Ladies’ competition Ragne Wiklund made history with a surprise win in the 1500m to become Norway’s first female Speed Skating world champion since 1938, and Irene Schouten (NED) made up for a disappointing third place in Saturday’s Mass Start with gold in the 5000m.

In the Men’s competition, Kai Verbij (NED) cashed in on his steeply rising performance curve to win his career-second 1000m World title. Joey Mantia (USA) celebrated his third Mass Start world title to equal Shani Davis with three golds in the same distance.

Fresh thinking paid dividends in the Team Pursuit races as the second and final World Cup of the season kicked off in Heerenveen on Friday. Norway’s Allan Dahl Johansson, Sverre Lunde Pedersen and Hallgeir Engebråten smashed the men’s track record by using a single skater upfront throughout. And in the ladies’ race Canada’s Ivanie Blondin, Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann also broke the track record by restricting the number of time-consuming change-ups. NHK Trophy was the fourth and last ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series event this season.

The Beijing 2022 Organising Committee (Beijing 2022), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Winter Sports Federations (IFs), concluded that it was necessary to take an immediate joint decision on a tailored programme based on the needs of each individual IF. Beijing 2022, the IOC, IPC and the IFs jointly decided to develop an adapted sports testing programme in preparation for the Olympic Winter Games 2022. The adapted programme will replace the organization of a series of international Test Events originally planned for the month of December 2020 and the first quarter of 2021.

In the men's tournament Patrick Roest (NED) won his third consecutive World Allround title. The 24-year-old Dutchman bounced back from a poor outing at the World Single Distance Championships two weeks ago in Salt Lake City, winning three of four distances on his way to the Allround title at the Vikingskipet.

The famous Hamar Vikingskipet, home of the 1994 Olympic Speed Skating, will host the first combined ISU World Sprint & World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Speed Skating history this weekend. Previously the Allround and Sprint Championships were held separately. Last year Patrick Roest (NED) and Martina Sáblíková (CZE) won the ISU World Allround Speed Skating titles in Calgary, while Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) and Nao Kodaira (JPN) took the ISU World Sprint Speed Skating titles in Heerenveen. All four champions will be present in Hamar to defend their titles. The Sprint Championships are on Friday and Saturday and the Allround tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.

Femke Kok and Robin Groot led a Dutch golden sweep across all seven Ladies' events at the ISU Junior World Speed Skating Championships in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland, last weekend. All was well that ended well for Kjeld Nuis (NED) on the final day of the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in Salt Lake City. After losing his world record en route to coming second in the 1000m on Saturday, the Olympic champion edged out his team-mate Thomas Krol to take the 1500m on Sunday. Joey Mantia (USA) surprised himself with a big personal best and a bronze on home ice. Dutch star Jorrit Bergsma made amends for a mediocre display in the 5000m and the 10000m by winning the Mass Start in style.

In the Ladies’ tournament Ireen Wüst kept her cool to win the Ladies’ 1500m. The 33-year-old Dutch superstar relied on her vast experience to seize her career fifth 1500m world title and her 20th world title in total, including Allround honors. Russia's Evgenia Lalenkova and Elizaveta Kazelina took silver and bronze. Canada’s Ivanie Blondin won a career-second Mass Start world title after a chaotic final sprint, with Kim Bo-Reum (KOR) and Irene Schouten (NED) collecting silver and bronze respectively.

Only a photo finish prevented the Netherlands team repeating the success in the men’s event, where they were pipped on the line by Canada.

On the last 10 occasions it has been contested, Martina Sáblíková (CZE) has won the Ladies’ 5000m title at the ISU World Single Distances Championships, so when she clocked a world record over the distance on Saturday in Salt Lake City, it seemed only a miracle could keep her from claiming an 11th consecutive gold. That miracle went by the name of Natalya Voronina. After Sáblíková's 6:41.18, the 25-year-old Russian broke the 6:40 barrier with 6:39.02 to seize her first major international title. In the 1000m 21-year-old Jutta Leerdam grabbed her first world title, and the first individual gold for the Netherlands, three days into the tournament.

In the men's 1000m Pavel Kulizhnikov (RUS) left the rest of the field shattered. The fastest man ever in the 500m broke the 1:06 barrier in the double sprint distance to add another world record to his tally. The man whose mark he beat, Kjeld Nuis (NED), conceded more than a second to take silver. Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil earned bronze after Thomas Krol (NED) was disqualified. To conclude Saturday's action, the Netherlands won their seventh consecutive Men's Team Pursuit title in a world-record time, with Japan coming second to grab their first ever world championships medal in this event.

Brianna Bocox led the USA to another 100 percent score in the Ladies' events on the final day of the Speed Skating Four Continents Championships on Sunday. In front of a loud home crowd in Milwaukee's Pettit National Ice Center the 22-year-old US skater took the 1000m title and joined Mia Kilburg-Manganello and Paige Schwartzburg to win the Ladies’ Team Pursuit little more than an hour later. 

In the Men's 1000m Kouki Kubo (JPN) and Laurent Dubreuil (CAN) were just 0.002 seconds apart, with the Japanese youngster edging the gold. The Men's Team Pursuit title went to Canada, after Team USA got disqualified, leaving Republic of Korea top of the Men’s medal table with four golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Jordan Belchos (CAN) won the men's mass start while Russia clinched the Team Sprint gold.

 

In the ladies' competition Nao Kodaira grabbed a much-coveted 500m gold on her home track to start the fourth leg of the ISU World Cup in Nagano, Japan, on a high note. Ivanie Blondin (CAN) continued her remarkable run of form by adding the Mass Start gold to the ones she collected in the 1500m, 5000m and Team Pursuit in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, last weekend. To conclude Friday's action for the women, the Dutch ladies won the Team Sprint, with Dione Voskamp making a victorious first appearance in the squad.

Heather Bergsma (USA) claimed her first World Cup gold this season in the Ladies 1000m, Kai Verbij (NED) did the same in the Men’s 1000m and the Dutch men took home the men’s Team Pursuit gold on day 2 of the ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Calgary.

Miho Takagi (JPN) claimed her first 3000m World Cup win in a Japanese national record time of 3 minutes and 57.09 seconds at the Calgary Olympic Oval on day one of this season’s third ISU World Cup Speed Skating. Canada’s men won the men’s team sprint in a new world record, while Russia won the ladies team sprint and Sven Kramer (NED) grabbed gold in the men’s 5000m.
